SBPT Barometric Pressure & Temperature Transmitter, SDI-12

The SBPT combines a barometric pressure sensor and a temperature sensor in a single die cast aluminum enclosure. Internal electronics calibrate both measurements and output them over the SDI-12 version 1.4 digital protocol, so one device and one cable give a data logger both atmospheric pressure and temperature.

The piezo-resistive silicon pressure sensor covers 750 to 1250 mbar with accuracy of ≤ ±0.25% FS, or ≤ ±0.1% FS as an option, and the NTC thermistor measures from -20 to +50 °C to within ±0.2 °C. The SBPT runs from a 6 to 36 VDC supply, is rated IP66 and is available with an internal temperature probe or a remote probe on a 10 m cable.

Key Features Of The SBPT Barometric Pressure And Temperature Transmitter

  1. Two Measurements In One Device
Barometric pressure and temperature from a single enclosure and a single cable.

  2. SDI-12 Version 1.4 Output
Calibrated digital values for direct connection to SDI-12 data loggers.

  3. 750 To 1250 mbar Range
Covers atmospheric pressure at most site elevations, with other ranges on request.

  4. Pressure Accuracy To ±0.1% FS
≤ ±0.25% FS BFSL as standard and ≤ ±0.1% FS BFSL as an option.

  5. Temperature Accuracy Of ±0.2 °C
An NTC 10 kΩ thermistor measures from -20 to +50 °C.

  6. Rugged IP66 Aluminum Enclosure
A die cast housing with a 2 m screened cable or M12 connector.

Applications For Barometric Pressure Transmitters

The SBPT is used wherever atmospheric pressure and temperature need to be recorded together:

  • Environmental monitoring – atmospheric pressure and temperature at weather and hydrology stations.
  • Barometric compensation – correcting absolute or non-vented level sensors for changes in air pressure.
  • Laboratory research – reference atmospheric conditions for experiments and calibration.
  • Air quality monitoring – pressure and temperature data alongside gas and particulate sensors.
  • Geotechnical applications – barometric reference for piezometers and ground monitoring.

Why Measure Barometric Pressure?

Atmospheric pressure changes constantly with the weather and with altitude. Those changes matter in their own right for meteorology and environmental studies, but they also affect other measurements. An absolute or sealed level sensor in a borehole or river, for example, reads the weight of the water plus the weight of the air above it, so a change in air pressure looks like a change in water level unless it is measured and subtracted.

The SBPT provides that reference. A piezo-resistive silicon sensor measures barometric pressure, an NTC thermistor measures temperature, and internal electronics output both as calibrated values over SDI-12, ready for the same data logger that reads the level sensors.

Temperature Sensor And Connection Options

  • Internal temperature sensor – 6 x 60 mm probe on the enclosure
  • Remote temperature sensor – 6 x 100 mm probe on a 10 m PVC cable
  • Electrical connection – 2 m screened cable (IP66) or M12 connector
  • Supply voltage – 6 to 36 VDC

SBPT Barometric Pressure Transmitter FAQs

What does the SBPT measure?

The SBPT measures barometric (atmospheric) pressure and temperature, and outputs both as calibrated values over SDI-12.

Why do I need a barometric sensor with a level sensor?

Absolute and sealed gauge level sensors respond to changes in air pressure as well as water level. A barometric reading lets the data logger subtract the atmospheric component to give true level.

Can the temperature probe be mounted away from the enclosure?

Yes. A remote temperature probe on a 10 m PVC cable is available, as well as a version with the probe mounted on the enclosure.

Can the SBPT be installed outdoors?

The die cast aluminum enclosure is rated IP66 and operates from -20 to +75 °C.
