Proximity Probes

Prox (Proximity) probes based on non-contact eddy current technology are used in critical machine applications that require condition monitoring measurement and /or automatic machine shutdown. Proximity probes systems are offered with probe tip sizes in 5mm, 8mm, 11mm and 25mm diameters and are available with current or voltage analog outputs.

What are Proximity Probes?

Proximity probes are sensors used to measure the distance or position of an object relative to the sensor without physical contact. They detect how close an object is by sensing changes in a physical field (such as electromagnetic, capacitive, or inductive fields) around the probe tip.

These probes are commonly used in industrial and engineering applications to monitor the position, vibration, or displacement of rotating machinery parts like shafts, turbines, or motors. They provide precise, real-time measurements that help in condition monitoring, alignment, and preventing mechanical failures.

Characteristics of Proximity Probes

  • Non-contact measurement: They do not touch the object, avoiding wear or damage.
  • High precision: Can detect very small displacements or vibrations.
  • Common types: Inductive proximity probes (eddy current sensors), capacitive probes, and optical proximity sensors.
  • Applications: Rotating machinery monitoring, shaft vibration analysis, gap measurement, and alignment verification.
